Mississippi State Baseball: Assistant Coaching Opening? – Cole Patterson, Maroon and White Nation
This morning, I wrote an article talking about the assistant job coaching opening that was posted on Mississippi State’s job directory yesterday. The posting caused lots of conversation, as Bulldogs fans were wondering who Cannizaro was bringing in.
"However, last night fellow MWN contributor Nathan Wright notified me of an assistant coaching opening listed on Mississippi State’s site. I thought that was interesting, considering I have not heard of any coaching movements related to Mississippi State.Bulldog Sports Radio tweeted out a screenshot of the opening this morning. As you can see, the opening was posted on June 16th. Yesterday. You can look at the link yourself here."
Bulldogs Sports Radio tweeted about the opening earlier today:
As the day went on, news circulated that Andy Cannizaro decided to move on from assistant Will Coggin.
As Saturday went on, we find out why the move was made. D1Baseball’s Kendall Rogers tweeted that Cannizaro decided to hire former Tulane assistant coach Jake Gautreau to his staff. Rogers expects the move to be official on Monday.
Will Sammon expands on the reports of Cannizaro expected to hire Gautreau.
"Mississippi State has parted ways with assistant baseball coach Will Coggin, sources said. Cannizaro is expected to hire Jake Gautreau as Coggin’s replacement, one source confirmed and as Kendall Rogers of D1Baseball.com first reported. An official announcement is expected by Tuesday, sources said. Coggin’s position officially opened on Friday.Gautreau most recently has worked as an agent for Boras Corporation and was formerly an assistant at Tulane. He was at Tulane from 2009-2014 and served as the team’s recruiting coordinator."
Sammon also notes that the two played at Tulane together from 1999-2001. Gautreau earned All-American and C-USA Player of the Year honors and was a 2001 first-round draft selection.
More baseball news! Konnor Pilkington will be a top-ten selection next June. At least, that’s what one draft expert thinks:
"MLB.com’s Jim Callis posted his “way-way-too-early projection for the first 10 picks next June”. Empashis on “way-way”, because the mock was based on the first ten picks of last week’s draft. Plus, things can change in a big way when predicting a year in advance.Nonetheless, Callis sees Mississippi State ace Konnor Pilkington hearing his name called within the first ten picks of next summer’s draft. Here is what he has to say about Pilkington."
