Mississippi State has an opening for an assistant coaching position listed on their site. What does this mean?

Mississippi State shocked many around the college baseball world with their surprisingly good season. Despite losing key players to both the draft and to injuries, the Bulldogs battled and put themselves in position for a SEC crown in the last week of the regular season. That, of course, didn’t come to be; however, State still won two in Hoover and won four games in two days to win the Hattiesburg regional.

The Bulldogs then went to Baton Rouge for a second straight Super Regionals apperance. Sure, the Dawgs ran out of gas, but it was impressive for the Diamond Dawgs to be in that position to begin with.

Year one under Andy Cannizaro was a huge success.

However, last night fellow MWN contributor Nathan Wright notified me of an assistant coaching opening listed on Mississippi State’s site. I thought that was interesting, considering I have not heard of any coaching movements related to Mississippi State.

Bulldog Sports Radio tweeted out a screenshot of the opening this morning. As you can see, the opening was posted on June 16th. Yesterday. You can look at the link yourself here.

What does this all mean?

Well, Gary Henderson is a former head coach at the SEC level and is likely wanting to get back. His time at Kentucky didn’t end the way he would like, so it wouldn’t be surprising if he is hungry for another shot to prove himself. Plus, what he did with the Bulldogs’ depleted pitching staff over the course of the season was nothing short of phenomenal.

Will Coggin also has a brilliant coaching future in front of him, too. Coggin is a former Diamond Dawg himself and has a strong knowledge of the game of baseball. Coggin was originally hired on John Cohen’s as the SJRSC third base coach and recruiting coordinator staff in 2009, according to his coaching bio.

The young coach jumped at an opportunity to coach at St. Johns River State College, where the team won 122 games from 2013-2015. Coggin returned to Starkville after the 2015 baseball season and was promoted to assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the 2016 season under Cannizaro.

What happens from here is all speculation. It will be interesting to see how this unfolds for Mississippi State. Who knows, maybe you can be the next assistant coach for Mississippi State baseball!
