The Major League Baseball postseason is underway with the final four teams for each league, and Mississippi State baseball is well represented.
Baseball is the one professional sport that doesn’t see an abundance of teams make the postseason. Only five teams from each league make the postseason every year, and one of those teams gets eliminated after one game.
So if you’re a Mississippi State baseball fan who loves to watch baseball but you don’t have a dog in the fight, then you might want to cheer for one of the teams with a former Mississippi State player.
Currently there are three Mississippi State baseball players on the postseason rosters of the remaining 8 teams in the playoffs. There are only 23 players from the SEC still playing, and only LSU and Vanderbilt have more according to this press release from the SEC.
The three former Mississippi State baseball players participating in Major League Baseball’s postseaason are the following:
- Jonathan Holder, RHP: New York Yankees
- Mitch Moreland, 1B: Boston Red Sox
- Brandon Woodruff, RHP: Milwaukee Brewers
More from Maroon and White Nation

One of these players is guaranteed to be eliminated from the postseason after the Divisional round is over unfortunately. Jonathan Holder and the Yankees were able to win the Wild Card game against the Oakland A’s, but it meant they have to face Mitch Moreland and the Red Sox in the Divisional round.
Brandon Woodruff started the game for the Milwaukee Brewers in their first game of the Divisional Series against the Colorado Rockies. The Brewers won the game 3-2. Woodruff pitched 3 innings, struck out three, and walked one.
The Brewers and the Red Sox had the best records in their leagues, so they will have home field advantage so long as they are still playing. If both teams were to make it to the World Series, former Mississippi State baseball first baseman Mitch Moreland would get home filed advantage as the Red Sox had the best record in all of baseball.
So if you’re looking for a team to cheer for, that might help you. Regardless, it’s always good to see former Mississippi State baseball players participating in the postseason.
