Nick Fitzgerald Currently Sits At Number Three For The Total Touchdowns In A Single Season

Right now, Fitzgerald has the third most touchdowns in a single season. That came in 2016. In his first year as a starter, Nick Fitzgerald scored 37 touchdowns. That’s pretty dang good.

A lot of that actually comes from the fact that Dan Mullen and Mississippi State football needed Fitzgerald to carry the Bulldogs in every single way possible that season. MSU didn’t have much of a running game outside of Fitz until late in the year when Aeris Williams emerged as the clear top running back option.

As it turns out, Fitzgerald actually also sits at number four on the list with 29 touchdowns. Not bad, but it is a bit of a step back. That said, it is worth noting that Fitzgerald didn’t even play a full quarter in the Egg Bowl and then wasn’t able to play in the TaxSlayer Bowl. So, that’s two opportunities to play that he never got.

But, several other options to score appeared around him. The aforementioned Williams was a solid back throughout the year and Kylin Hill also made his presence known.

It’s totally possible that Fitzgerald could climb to the top of this record in 2018. But, because of what he’ll have around him when it comes to running the ball, who knows if he can actually do it. That’s not a bad problem to have as a quarterback.

Fitzgerald will need to score 42 total touchdowns in order to move his name to the top of this list. If he can improve as a passer and then also get enough running touchdowns, this is definitely something that he can accomplish. But it might depend on how much Joe Moorhead uses Fitzgerald running in the red zone.
