Clanga: 2018 DB Shawn Preston commits to Mississippi State

Today has been a very good Maroon Friday for Mississippi State. The Bulldogs landed their second commitment of the day in a Louisiana defensive back.

Mississippi State adds their fourteenth commitment to the 2018 recruiting class and their second of the day.

3-star Louisiana defensive back Shawn Preston announced his decision to commit to the Bulldogs via a Periscope live-stream in front of family:

Preston is a 6-foot-1 and 195 pound defensive back from Saint James, Louisiana. He chose the Bulldogs over a top four that also included Louisiana Tech, Texas Tech, and Vanderbilt. Despite the heavy interest from the home-state team, the Red Raiders, and Derek Mason, Preston felt that Mississippi State gives him the best opportunity to succeed.

Mississippi State running backs coach Greg Knox is Preston’s lead recruiter. Knox is also the primary recruiter for Under Armour All-American and fellow MSU commit Malik Heath. Needless to say, Knox has been an important recruiter for the 2018 class.

Per 247Sports, Preston absolutely filled up the stats during his junior season. The Louisiana native recorded 45 tackles, four for a loss, and broke up five passes last season for St. James. He also forced one fumble, recovered three, and scored on one. Oh, and he showed he can be a ball-hawk too, as Preston picked off the quarterback four times. He brought two back for six. He has the potential to develop into a stud in the Bulldog’s defense.

With Todd Grantham now in charge of the defense in Starkville, the Bulldogs are going after aggressive and physical defenders. Tyrese Ross’ commitment earlier today gives the Bulldogs a physical safety that the defense has been missing since the Nickoe Whitley days. Preston shows the ability and upside to help in that capacity, too. This could be a fun defensive back duo in the future for Mississippi State.
