Mississippi State only has two scholarship quarterbacks on the roster, but are in the mix for a pair of elite signal callers. What does the Bulldogs’ QB situation look like?
Nick Fitzgerald and Everyone Else?
Mississippi State will begin its 2017–2018 season in 104 days, but who stands behind Nick Fitzgerald as the starter?
The quarterback situation for the Bulldogs would appear obvious: Nick Fitzgerald will be the starter. The only question lies is, who will be Fitzgerald’s backup?
Damian Williams, Nick Tiano, and Elijah Staley all transferred out of Mississippi State during the past year, leaving a question mark behind Fitz.

The ideal situation would have been to redshirt 4 star dual-threat QB Keyaton Thompson, but with no other option, expect Thompson to prepare as QB2 for the Bulldogs during the upcoming season.
Keyaton Thompson rated as the 5th best dual-threat quarterback in the 2017 class, is a worthy back up to Fitzgerald, but is he ready to be throw into the fire as a freshman? Thompson’s senior stats for Landry-Walker High School would suggest just that, throwing for 3,521 yards and 40 touchdowns, while only tossing 5 interceptions.
Who’s Next?
Thompson will be the backup quarterback for the Bulldogs, but an interesting conversation would be in a couple of years after Fitzgerald graduates. Thompson should have the advantage, but Dan Mullen is aggressively pursuing a pair of elite quarterbacks in the 2018 signing class.
4 star QB Jalen Mayden, who is 100% projected by 247 Sports to commit to Mississippi State on May 23rd, could create an interesting discussion in a few years time. His highlight tape shows how impressive the Texas signal caller was as a sophomore two seasons ago.
Bohannon was widely expected to give his pledge to Mississippi State, but with Mayden set to commit as well, did that steer his decision? Before his scheduled announcement, it would not have been a shock if Mississippi State landed both prospects, but Bohanon’s change of mind is something to watch.
