SEC Title Clinching Scenarios: How do the Bulldogs finish?
The SEC baseball regular season is coming to a close this weekend. How does Mississippi State finish in both the conference and division race?
So here we are.
It is finally the last weekend of regular season play, and Mississippi State is in much of the same situation as they were last year. Last season they swept Arkansas to outright win the SEC regular season championship.
While there is zero chance of winning the SEC title outright this time around, there is still some interesting scenarios. We discuss below.
To secure a first round bye in the SEC Tournament-
1-Mississippi State can clinch the first round bye with 2 wins over LSU.
OR
2-Mississippi State needs one win over LSU AND needs Texas A&M to win 2 over Arkansas.
OR
3-Mississippi State needs one win in the series with LSU AND for Florida to sweep Kentucky.
To win a share of the SEC WEST title-
1-Mississippi State needs exactly 2 wins over LSU AND for Texas A&M to win at least 1 over Arkansas.
To win the SEC WEST outright-
1-Mississippi State must sweep LSU to accomplish this.
To win a share of the SEC Regular season title
1-Mississippi State must sweep LSU AND Kentucky would need to win exactly 2 games over Florida.
My Predictions-
This Bulldogs team has been hard to predict this year. You think they are down, but then they go and do something like they did last night that shows that fire inside them again.
LSU is a good team all over the place. I think sweeping them is out of question, but I do believe the Tigers take game one — due in fact to their excellent pitching. However, the Bulldogs wont let them take the next 2, as we earn the series win.
That result puts us out of a share of the SEC Title and the outright SEC West championship. So, the only other series to watch from there would be the Texas A&M series versus Arkansas. I think Texas A&M wins two at home to give us a share of the SEC West.
Florida will win two over Kentucky to win the SEC Regular Season Title. Ultimately, the two wins over LSU that I think we will get, give us the first round bye in Hoover.
Basically, all the Bulldogs need to worry about is LSU and what Mississippi State can control. Either way, I have seen this as a very successful season, and I look forward to what these Bulldogs can do in both the SEC and the NCAA tournament.
