Mississippi State’s rally comes up short, as Georgia takes game two to even the weekend series with a 4-1 victory in the “battle of the Bulldogs”.

After a wonderful pitching performance from Konnor Pilkington in game 1 that saw them defeat Georgia 9-3, much could not be said about game 2 in a 4-1 loss.

Mississippi State only gave up four hits on the day, but all four hits were timely for the Georgia Bulldogs. Denver McQuarry got the start and looked good the first couple of innings before he started to struggle to find the strike zone.

In the bottom of the 3rd, after walking 2 batters, Georgia’s Mitchell Webb hit a double to drive in a run followed by a 2 RBI single from McGovern. Denver McQuarry would only go one more inning after the 3rd, picking up the loss in the game before turning the ball over to Peyton Plumlee in the 5th.

Plumlee also struggled to find the zone, walking 6 batters while only giving up 1 hit. In the top of the 8th, State picked up its first and only run of the game. After a couple of hits and yet another BB by Brent Rooker, Ryan Gridley hit a sacrifice fly to left field to drive Hunter Stovall for the first — and only — run of the game for the Bulldogs of Maroon.

Georgia scored an insurance run in bottom of the 8th, after a throwing error by the infield allowed the runner to score. Kevin Smith of Georgia earned the win — pitching 7 innings with 6 Ks and only giving up 3 hits. Zac Kristofak is credited with the save.

Mississippi State looks to pick up the series win tomorrow before heading back home. On the mound for the Bulldogs in Maroon will be Jacob Billingsley — who sports a 1-1 record with a ERA of 4.63. The game will be played at 12 CST and can be viewed on  SECN+. Winning the series is key after LSU completed the three game sweep over Auburn this weekend.
