Here are the top 5 MSU baseball teams of all time…

These days everyone wants to know where the team they just saw stands among the all-time greats. Typically we over-shoot it because we want to be able to say we saw the best….and whatever is the most recent thing in our minds will always stick out more. It’s part of our prisoner of the moment culture.

Nevertheless, I’ll bite, and write this list of the top 5 MSU baseball teams of all time. We’ll start with on that’s really familiar:

More from Mississippi State Baseball

2016

This was perhaps the deepest team in Mississippi State history. That’s easy to prove as it had a program record 11 players drafted by MLB.

They won the SEC with a program record 21 conference wins. And it happened in a league that featured seven top 10 teams (MSU included) – five of which were on the Bulldogs’ schedule.

They hosted a Regional in Starkville – and for the first time in 13 tries became the first MSU team to ever sweep a Starkville Regional.

The kicker for this team was they did not make the College World Series. That is a mark on them for sure, but ultimately can’t mean everything. They didn’t win a national title just as the other nine MSU teams who made it to Omaha did not win one.

We’ve seen it happen to the best of them. Vanderbilt in 2013 went 26-3 in the SEC but lost their Super Regional. Texas A&M, LSU and South Carolina all joined MSU as Super Regional hosts who lost in 2016.
