MSU Baseball will be gutted by MLB Draft

The 2016 MSU baseball season and the 2016 MLB Draft ended this weekend. The latter will ultimately rip the nucleus of the former apart.

We’ll see what kind of program John Cohen has built in 2017. It will be his 9th at Mississippi State – and he’ll hope to bounce back from losing almost everyone from a SEC championship team.

We saw what happened in 2014 when a College World Series team lost a few key players. Here’s the long list of Bulldogs drafted by MLB this weekend:

  • Dakota Hudson – 1st round by Cardinals
  • Reid Humphreys – 7th round by Rockies
  • Daniel Brown – 7th round by Brewers
  • Jacob Robson – 8th round by Tigers
  • Zac Houston – 11th round by Tigers
  • Nathaniel Lowe – 13th round by Rays
  • Gavin Collins – 13th round by Indians
  • Vance Tatum – 18th round by Royals
  • Austin Sexton – 18th round by Cardinals
  • Jack Kruger – 20th round by Angels
  • Brent Rooker – 38th round by Twins

There were also four signees who were drafted, but only one is expected to sign.

The above list is pretty much every impact player outside Jake Mangum and Ryan Gridley. It’s the every day CF, LF, 3B, 1B, C, Friday starter, Saturday starter, set-up man, closer and Zac Houston who came on strong at the end of the year as a 3rd starter.

In addition to that, second baseman John Holland has exhausted his eligibility.

Expect nearly all of these drafted Bulldogs to sign. The only ones who might not sign would be Jack Kruger and Brent Rooker. Kruger because he possibly may want to stay in school and Rooker because being drafted in the 38th round you aren’t going to get much of any signing bonus.

Assuming everyone signs, here’s what next year’s lineup would probably look like:

C: Elih Merrero
1B: Cole Gordon
2B: Hunter Stovall
SS: Ryan Gridley
3B: Luke Alexander
LF: Cody Brown
CF: Jake Mangum
RF: Brant Blaylock

If Kruger and/or Rooker came back it would be a huge coup for MSU. Put Rooker in RF with Kruger at DH and catching and the lineup still has some experience.

Pitching on the other hand, will be a total mystery. Hudson, Sexton and Houston are all gone. Humphreys is gone at the end of the game and Brown out of the bullpen. Ryan Rigby and Blake Smith will be back as well as Konner Pilkington but for the most part we’re starting from scratch.

The 2016 Diamond Dawgs were a great team, and considering such it’s no surprise a record number of them were drafted. Now the hard work will begin again for Coach Cohen and his staff to rebuild another winner who can compete for Omaha.
