Mississippi State landed a national seed in the 2016 NCAA Tournament.

2016 has been an incredible success for Mississippi State in a number of ways. Now they’ll have a prime opportunity to play for a national championship as the No. 6 overall seed.

The Bulldogs finished last place in the SEC in 2015 but won the league in 2016. They won the most conference games in school history (21) and the first SEC title since 1989.

After going 1-2 in the SEC Tournament, State is ready to move on to Regional play…where the rubber meets the road. Here are the teams in the Starkville Regional:

  1. Mississippi State
  2. Cal State Fullerton
  3. Louisiana Tech
  4. SE Missouri State

This is MSU’s first time to host since 2013 when they beat South Alabama, Mercer and Central Arkansas. Later that year the Bulldogs advanced to the College World Series and then played for the national championship where they lost to UCLA.

If State is able to win the Starkville Regional this weekend, they’ll be able to host a Super Regional in Starkville as well. Win that and the Dawgs will be headed to Omaha.

Mississippi State has never been awarded a national seed since they’ve been issued starting in 1999. Starkville has hosted a Super Regional, however, vs. Clemson in 2007 due to both teams not being a 1 seed in their Regionals.

The Starkville Regional will be lined up with the Lafayette Regional so the winners of each will play in a Super Regional. The Lafayette  Regional consists of ULL, Princeton, Arizona and Sam Houston State.

Game times for the Starkville Regional are as follows:

  • Game 1: Mississippi State vs. SE Missouri State, Friday at 1:30 pm
  • Game 2: Cal State Fullerton vs. Louisiana Tech, Friday at 6:30 pm
  • Game 3: loser of game 1 vs. loser of game 2, Saturday at 1:30 pm
  • Game 4: winner of game 1 vs. winner of game 2, Saturday at 6:30 pm
  • Game 5: winner of game 3 vs. loser of game 4, Sunday at 1:30 pm
  • Game 6: winner of game 4 vs. winner of game 5, Sunday at 6:30 pm
  • Game 7: only necessary if the winner of game 5 wins game 6, Monday at 6:30
