In what will likely be the first of many honors for Mississippi State baseball true freshman Jake Mangum, he was awarded the C-Spire Ferriss Trophy earlier today at a banquet taken place at the Mississippi Sports Museum and Hall of Fame.

The award is given annually to the top collegiate baseball player in the state of Mississippi. Its namesake is in honor of the legendary Mississippi State baseball pitcher and former Boston Red Sox pitcher Boo Ferriss.

There were five finalists for the award. Three of the finalists came from Mississippi State, one from Ole Miss, and one from Delta State.

There were many Mississippi State baseball fans who were concerned that with three Bulldogs being nominated, the vote might be split which would allow J.B. Woodman to take home the trophy.

Mangum had a phenomenal season, and considering the fact he was just a true freshman, it is even more remarkable. The talented outfielder hit .427 on the season with 9 doubles and 3 triples. He also drove in 25 runs and had a slugging percentage of .532 to go along with 6 steals on 7 attempts.

Even more amazing was the fact he was actually better against SEC opponents. Against conference foes, Mangum hit .437 and drove in 16 of his 25 RBIs with all of his stolen bases coming against the SEC.

The other two Bulldogs nominated for the award were Dakota Hudson and Reid Humphreys. Both players had solid seasons all around, but it was the magnificent play of the true freshman who took home the trophy.

The newest Mississippi State baseball winner of the Ferriss Trophy will likely see his name on many awards lists to come. All-SEC, Freshman All-American and possibly more are sure to come. Congratulations to Jake Mangum on being named the best collegiate baseball player in the state of Mississippi in 2016!
