Arguably the Best Hitter for Mississippi State Baseball is Flying way under the Radar

While Jake Mangum has grabbed a lot of the attention for the Mississippi State baseball team, it could easily be argued Nathaniel Lowe has been the most valuable player on the team.

Most college coaches don’t like to have problems. But if you are going to have a problem, having one like Mississippi State baseball coach John Cohen does is a good one to have.

More bulldogs: MSU Wins 8th straight SEC Game

Cohen has a multitude of hitters who could hit just about anywhere he wanted them to in the lineup. Jake Mangum has been the one drawing most of the headlines because no one saw what he has done coming.

But Mississippi State baseball first baseman Nathaniel Lowe is doing as much for this team, if not more, as anyone else. And he is barely getting recognized for his accomplishments.

There are three Bulldogs nominated for the Ferriss Trophy which is given to the best baseball player in the state of Mississippi. Dakota Hudson, Jake Mangum, and Reid Humphreys are all deserving of nominations, but Nathaniel Lowe should be there as well.

More from Maroon and White Nation

in the first game against Arkansas, Lowe continued his onslaught against SEC pitching. He went 2-4 at the plate with two doubles, bringing his season total to 19, and drove in his 46th run of the season.

The overall stats for Lowe are as impressive as anyone on the Mississippi State baseball team. Lowe is hitting .364, which is good for second on the team. His 46 RBIs and 19 doubles are the best marks on the team.

If you look at what he has done in SEC play, it is even more unreal. Lowe is hitting right at an even .400 against SEC pitching, second only to Jake Mangum. Four of his five home runs have come in conference play, he is second on the team with  25 RBIs against the SEC and he is slugging an unheard of .600.

Lowe has had an amazing season, and there are very few people who have noticed because of the exploits of Jake Mangum. Lowe won’t be first team All SEC, that honor will go to Hunter Melton of Texas A&M who has six more home runs and leads the SEC in RBIs with 62. But the Bulldogs have a special player of their own, and I hope he starts to get a little more recognition for what he has done as the 2016 season comes to a close.
