Remodeling Dak Prescott: From Running to Mobile Quarterback

As the most accomplished quarterback in school history prepares to take the field for the 2015 season, Dak Prescott has two goals. The first is to lead Mississippi State to a win in every game he plays. The second is to improve his stock for the NFL Draft. This series will take a look at five areas I believe Prescott needs to change to make both of those dreams a reality.

Part 2: Remodeling Dak Prescott: Accuracy

Dak Prescott is one of the best running quarterbacks there is in college football. I discussed this in part 1 on Monday. But Dak Prescott needs to change from a running quarterback to a mobile quarterback.

What’s the difference? Some would argue there isn’t one, but there are some distinct differences.

Throughout his time at Mississippi State, Dak Prescott has repeatedly been compared to Tim Tebow and Cam Newton. Those are good comparisons. And as of right now, Dak would resemble these quarterbacks when he enters the NFL.

But his game needs to reflect more of what we have seen from Ben Roethlisberger and Aaron Rodgers. Tebow and Newton are quarterbacks who look to run. They quickly pull the ball down and take off on a moment’s notice. Roethlisberger and Rodgers are mobile quarterbacks. Neither has racked up a ton of rushing yards in their career, but they move around in the pocket so much, they buy themselves time to find an open receiver. They only take off with the ball when nothing is going to develop.

The Bulldogs can be successful with Dak running the ball much like he did in 2014. But they can take the next step if Dak uses his speed to not be a running quarterback, but to be a mobile quarterback.
