Mississippi State Bulldogs News: Football adds portal WRs, MBK travels to Vanderbilt

Two former MAC wide receivers are now headed to Starkville, and Bulldog basketball looks to move to 2-0 in SEC play.

It's frigid across Mississippi, but that doesn't mean things aren't heating up for the Mississippi State Bulldogs. MSU football picked up a pair of transfer portal commitments at the wide receiver position, and MSU men's basketball heads north for their second SEC matchup of the season.

Northern Illinois transfer wide receiver Cam Thompson commits to Mississippi State football

Northern Illinois has become a Mississippi State pipeline this transfer portal cycle. WR Cam Thompson became the third former Husky to commit to the Bulldogs. The 6-0, 198 sophomore finished one yard short of leading the run-heavy Huskies in receiving with 391 yards and three scores on 28 catches to go along with a kick return TD. He's a shifty and quick playmaker who's dangerous in space.

Eastern Michigan transfer wide receiver Markus Allen commits to Mississippi State football

State got its second MAC transfer WR in as many days with the commitment of Eastern Michigan's Markus Allen. The 6-2, 212 junior caught 43 passes for 651 yards and three TDs for the Eagles in 2024. A big play threat on the outside, six of Allen's receptions went for 30 yards are more. Allen began his career at Wisconsin and then played one season at the JUCO level before transferring to EMU.

Mississippi State basketball travels to Vanderbilt for second SEC game

Following a dominant win over South Carolina to open SEC play, #14 Bulldog basketball (13-1, 1-0 SEC) heads up to Nashville to face an upstart Vanderbilt squad (13-1, 1-0 SEC). The Commodores have seen an impressive turnaround in year one under HC Mark Byington, led by an exciting offense that scores 86 points per game. The 'Dores love to shoot the three-ball and have four players averaging double-figures. Despite lacking size on the defensive end, they're great about forcing turnovers and blocking shots. However, leading scorer Jason Edwards (18.3 PPG) is questionable for the matchup. The Bulldogs will tipoff in Nashville at 8:00 PM CT on ESPNU.
