Time is flying for college football, as the half way point is upon us. Mississippi State football's last three weeks have been interesting to say the least. After a rough start to the year, the Bulldogs are playing better ball, despite the losses continuing to build.

Here's how I grade Mississippi State halfway through the season...

Grade for the Bulldog Offense: B

I am more than happy with what I have seen as of late. After a slump against Toledo, Mississippi State found some rhythm. Blake Shapen managed well (13 of 21 for 140 yards with one touchdown) against Florida but sustained an injury. Michael Van Buren Jr. stepped in and did what he could to finish the game. That following week, the Bulldogs played well with what they had. Unfortunately. Texas’ offense was too much to keep up with, especially with Arch Manning performing the way he did. Against Georgia, Mississippi State’s offense played their best ball of the season. State posted 385 total yards with an average of 6.1 yards per play. Van Buren Jr. showed huge promise for State (20 of 37 for 306 yards with 3 touchdowns). This group is improving.

Grade for the Bulldog Defense: C

To be ostrestrized for their lackluster performances so far this season, Mississippi State’s defense has shown some grit. After a shocking letdown against Florida, Coleman Hutzler has rallied his troops in the right direction. The Bulldogs held their own as they did battle with one of the top offenses in the country, Texas. Even though the score reflects a loss against Georgia, Kirby Smart’s offense struggled to totally pick apart Mississippi State, and MSU managed some big plays to give their offense opportunities. This is a great sign for things to come.

Grade for the Bulldog Special Teams: B

Of all the things that have gone wrong for the Bulldogs, special teams are not of them. Mississippi State’s average has stayed consistent at kickoff (25.50) and punt return yards (19.00). The kick and punt game has been an essential this season. Nick Barr-Mira has punted 13 times for a steady average of 44.43 yards per punt. Kyle Ferrie has continued in the right direction, making 5 of 6 field goals, with 47 yards being his longest this season.

Overall Grade for Mississippi State Football: C+

There is a famous quote that summarizes this season for Mississippi State: “If you can’t handle the heat, get out of the kitchen." Jeff Lebby and Mississippi State are doing the exact opposite; they are facing the heat head on. The injuries and miscues have not rattled the Bulldogs; rather, they've used them as motivation. With the second half around the corner, I expect Mississippi State to continue fighting through the end.
