2013 Liberty Bowl: MSU football pummels the Rice Owls

The 2013 season got off to a rough start, but thanks to some miraculous moments towards the end of the season, Dan Mullen and the Mississippi State football team was able to keep the bowl appearance streak alive as the Bulldogs went to Memphis for a Liberty Bowl meeting with the Rice Owls.

For the fourth straight season, MSU made it to a bowl game.

On December 31, 2013 in Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium in Memphis, Tennessee, Mississippi State was able to close out the 2013 year with a decisive and dominant Liberty Bowl victory over a 10-win Rice Owls team.

As a sophomore, quarterback Dak Prescott was dominant and he torched the Owls defense over and over again. Prescott managed to throw for 283 yards and then run for 78 more. In total, he put up five touchdowns.

Jameon Lewis caught nine passes and absolutely scorched Rice’s secondary, recording 220 receiving yards in the process.

On the other side of the ball, Mississippi State absolutely demolished Rice’s offense and the Owls could not generate much of anything that resembled and offense. Rice scored once in the first quarter and then was shutout after that.

The Bulldogs outgained the Owls 533 to 145. And MSU won 44-7, giving Miss. State football fans plenty of hope as State set up for a big 2014 season.
