3 big questions Mississippi State football must answer vs. Alabama Crimson Tide
By Ethan Lee
Will the secondary adjust coverages to limit explosive plays?
Something that has been very clear through the first two weeks of SEC play for the Mississippi state football team is how problematic explosive plays have been for the Bulldogs’ secondary and MSU defensive coordinator Matt Brock.
And while he isn’t as proven as the past three dual threat quarterbacks the Bulldogs have faced, Jalen Milroe is still really talented and able to take advantage of space when given the opportunity.
Will we see Brock and Zach Arnett approach this Mississippi State football game with a different defensive philosophy? Will they go to a more bend but don’t break sort of approach? Or do you live with blitzing and accept that sometimes bad things are going to happen?
With as inconsistent as we’ve seen Mississippi State’s secondary be this year, I don’t envy the position that Arnett and Brock are in. And it doesn’t help that MSU’s defensive front seemingly has a hard time of generating pressure on dual threat quarterbacks without having to blitz.
The secondary simply can’t allow Milroe and his teammates to take off down field consistently. MSU can’t afford to give up big play after big play.
Arnett and Brock know it. It remains to be seen how they approach that problem. Of course, it is worth wondering if any sort of fix even matters given some of the personnel depth issues at various positions.
