Mississippi State basketball: Reggie Perry earns Top SEC Freshman honor
The Mississippi State basketball team has a rising star in Reggie Perry, and he was named SEC Freshman of the Week for the second time this season.
The Mississippi State basketball team has roared back to life in their last four games. After losing to the Kentucky Wildcats at home on February 9th, the Bulldogs have now won four straight games to bring their record to 20-7 overall and 8-6 in SEC play.
A big part of the resurgence for the Mississippi State basketball team has been the play of Freshman Reggie Perry. The talented forward was inserted into the starting lineup about a month ago, and the results since then have shown it was definitely the right call to place him in the starting lineup.
Reggie Perry had another great week for the Mississippi State basketball team when the Bulldogs picked up two more victories, one on the road and one at home. Against the Georgia Bulldogs on Wednesday night last week, Perry scored 12 points, collected five rebounds, and had two blocks.
On Saturday against the South Carolina Gamecocks, Perry took his play up another notch. The Mississippi State basketball team trailed the Gamecocks by as much as 16 points in the contest, but Reggie Perry’s career high 21 points helped lead the Bulldogs to a ferocious comeback. Mississippi State would go on to win the game by a final score of 76-61.
For his efforts, Reggie Perry has been named the SEC Freshman of the Week for the second time this season. The award was also bestowed upon him after the Mississippi State basketball team went on the road and won their game against Ole Miss at the beginning of February.
Here is what the SEC office had to say in the official press release announcing Perry as the Freshman of the Week.
"Mississippi State forward Reggie Perry, a 6-foot-10, 245-pound freshman from Thomasville, Ga., averaged 16.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks in wins at Georgia and against South Carolina. Perry racked up 17 of his career-high tying 21 points versus South Carolina during the second half as the Bulldogs overcame a 16-point first half deficit. He connected on 61.1 percent (11-of-18) of his field goal attempts and produced an 83.3 percent (10-of-12) mark at the foul line. Perry added 12 points which included three free throws inside the game’s final minutes at Georgia."
The Mississippi State basketball team is trying to make it back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 2009 season. If they are going to do so, they will need Reggie Perry to play like he has since being inserted into the starting lineup.
