The Mississippi State basketball team has a special player in Freshman Reggie Perry, and he was honored for his play last week.

When the Mississippi State basketball team signed Reggie Perry, they knew they were getting a special player. Perry was one of the highest rated players in his class and was named to the 2018 McDonald’s All American Team.

The only thing holding Reggie Perry back on the 2018-19 Mississippi State basketball team was the amount of depth the team had as it started the season. Finding significant playing time for the talented freshman hasn’t been easy for Ben Howland.

This changed last week, especially so in the Mississippi State basketball win over Ole Miss this past Saturday. With Aric Holman struggling, Ben Howland decided to give Reggie Perry a start, and did he respond in a big way.

Reggie Perry went off for a career best 21 points in the game against Ole Miss, and he contributed 11 rebounds, seven of which were offensive, for the Mississippi State basketball game. It was arguably his best game of the season.

For his efforts, Reggie Perry was named the SEC Freshman of the Week. Here is the tweet from the SEC office announcing his selection.

Here is what the official release from the SEC office said about Perry’s performance last week which earned him the honor.

"Mississippi State forward Reggie Perry, a 6-foot-10, 245-pound freshman from Thomasville, Ga., averaged 19.5 points, nine rebounds and 1.5 blocks at Alabama and at Ole Miss. He poured in a career-best 21 points and matched a SEC season-high with 11 rebounds at Ole Miss en route to his second double-double in his last three outings. Perry canned the go-ahead trey with 3:32 remaining to break a 73-73 tie and give Mississippi State the lead for good for its first win in Oxford since 2011. He opened the week with a then career-high 18 points on 9-of-12 shooting at Alabama only to set a new mark during the Ole Miss game."

Next. Perry and Woodard need more playing time,. dark

Will Reggie Perry continue to see more playing time for the Mississippi State basketball team in the coming weeks? With Aric Holman only getting 9 minutes without scoring a single point in the win over Ole Miss, it’s hard to imagine a scenario where Reggie Perry isn’t receiving the lion’s share of playing time at power froward for the remainder of the 2018-19 basketball season.
