Mississippi State football: A stellar defense is being wasted by offensive ineptitude
The Mississippi State football team has one of the best defenses in the country, but the team can’t score points.
The numbers put up by the Mississippi State football team’s defense are so impressive they are staggering. The Bulldogs entered the game with the LSU Tigers giving up just under 13 points a game. Against LSU, they gave up 19, seven of which came after LSU returned an interception to the Mississippi State three yard line.
And the Bulldogs weren’t even close to winning.
The offensive ineptitude of the Mississippi State football team has become preposterous at this point. Against the four SEC opponents MSU has played, the Bulldogs have scored 7, 6, 23, and 3 points. That’s an average of 13 points a game, and that average is seriously inflated by the 23 points the team put up against Auburn.

In basically a month, the Mississippi State football team has scored three touchdowns. All the while, the defensive effort is one of the best we have seen from a Bulldog team.
Coming into the game against LSU, the Mississippi State football defense was 8th in the country in total defense and 1st in the country in scoring defense. To win games, the offense has to do very little.
But right not now, the offense can’t do anything. Against the LSU Tigers, the offense for the Bulldogs looked as bad as it had all season long. Mississippi State quarterback Nick Fitzgerald completed just 8 of 24 pass attempts for 59 yards and threw four interceptions. The running game is solid, but at some point, you have to be able to do something in the passing game.
There were many calling for Keytaon Thompson to be given a chance during the game. Mississippi State football coach Joe Moorhead said after the game he never gave making such a move a thought.
Keytaon Thompson may or may not be able to do anything more with the offense than what Nick Fitzgerald has done so far at quarterback. But Joe Moorhead owes it to his phenomenal defense to at least see if they can generate any kind of spark with a change at quarterback.
