Justin Strawn has laid out the argument against changing quarterbacks. It’s a pretty good one. Joe Moorhead should focus heavily on tailoring the offense to fitting the strengths of his players. I will certainly agree with that.
Moorhead, as a head coach, should be using the strengths of his players to win games.
However, that alone doesn’t invalidate the possibility of changing quarterbacks for a better chance at succeeding. If Nick Fitzgerald continues to struggled in Moorhead’s offense, be it tailored to fit Fitzgerald’s skillset or not, then the Bulldogs should go ahead and make a change.
Mississippi State needs to focus on winning now but also what’s best for the future of this program. Watching Fitzgerald flounder does no good for anyone involved here or for either of those stated goals.
There’s a possibility that the experience that Thompson has with Moorhead’s offense from this spring could lead to him having more success than Fitzgerald. If that’s actually the case and Fitzgerald continues to struggle, then the Bulldogs should strongly consider making a change for the future and for the rest of this season.
