There has been a lot of discussion about Nick Fitzgerald’s ability to throw deep passes in Joe Moorhead’s offense, and the early indications seem to be he can do it.

When Joe Moorhead was given the reins of the Mississippi State football team after Dan Mullen left for Florida, a lot of attention was being placed on Nick Fitzgerald. One of the key tenets to the Joe Moorhead offense was big, explosive plays in the passing game. This made people assume Fitzgerald was going to be required to throw the football down the field more often.

This was a concern for many Mississippi State fans. Despite all of the wonderful things Nick Fitzgerald has done as a quarterback for the Bulldogs, throwing the football down field accurately on a consistent basis has not been one of those things.

The good news is Nick Fitzgerald seems to be making some really strong progress in throwing the ball deep down field. It’s still early, and the team is just going through practice drills, but if the early indications from what we are seeing in practice can translate during a live game, the Bulldog offense could make huge leaps this year.

Tyler Horka, the new Mississippi State beat writer for the Clarion Ledger, has been attending practice. While he has been there, he has been filming some of the progress Nick Fitzgerald has made throwing the football, and he has tweeted out some of those videos.

Here are a few examples of Nick Fitzgerald throwing the football from Tyler Horka’s Twitter feed.

Again, it’s still early and these throws are being made when receivers don’t have defensive backs covering them, so we can’t say for certain that these throws will translate once we get to a game. But if you’re looking for signs Nick Fitzgerald is progressing the way he needs to for Joe Moorhead’s offense, then you’re seeing exactly what you need to.
