Mississippi State Football vs Ole Miss 2011

The Battle for the Golden Egg. The Egg Bowl Rivalry. It’s got a few different names and will be mentioned on this list a few different times. When Dan Mullen first arrived in Starkville, he put his emphasis on winning within the state of Mississippi and knocking down Ole Miss.

That’s exactly what he did with the 2011 Egg Bowl.

The Bulldogs won the previous two years, knocking Ole Miss down in upset fashion in 2009 and then beating the Rebels by eight points in 2010. Then, in 2011, Mississippi State absolutely dominated the Ole Miss Rebels.

The Bulldogs beat Ole Miss by a score of 31-3. Houston Nutt was canned shortly afterwards despite leading the Rebels to back-to-back Cotton Bowl victories earlier on in his career with them.

With the win, Dan Mullen took his team to the Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl where the Bulldogs defeated the Wake Forest Demon Deacons.

With a third consecutive Egg Bowl victory, the Bulldogs showed that MSU was on top of the rivalry, at least momentarily. Things changed a bit later on, but Dan Mullen and Mississippi State certainly felt good at the end of the 2011 season, even if the bulk of that year was a frustrating mess.
