Mississippi State Football vs Ole Miss 2013
The 2012 Egg Bowl was a particularly painful one for Mississippi State. Just as great as the 2009 Egg Bowl was for MSU, the 2012 was equally painful. In 2009, MSU upset Ole Miss to set the Bulldogs on a path of owning the Golden Egg Trophy for three consecutive seasons.
In 2012, MSU fell apart in Oxford as Ole Miss claimed the Egg.
In the 2013 Egg Bowl, things were kinda bleak for the Bulldogs. To be completely honest, things were kinda bleak for everyone as the weather was awful and abysmally cold. But, after an 8 win season in 2012, MSU took a step back and was 5-6 coming into the Egg Bowl in 2013.
The Bulldogs came into the Battle for the Golden Egg after knocking the Arkansas Razorbacks down in overtime. MSU’s quarterback situation was weird due to injury issues and Tyler Russell and Dak Prescott were not expected to play.
That left MSU with Damian Williams starting. Williams wasn’t handed a full playbook, but he kept MSU in the game by not making mistakes. The Bulldogs’ defense then kept Ole Miss from scoring, allowing MSU to keep the game close late into the game.
And then Dak Prescott stepped in during the fourth quarter. And then Mississippi State football found a way to win the game after tying it up late with a field goal. The Bulldogs scored on 4th and 1 on the gaol line with Dak running the winning touchdown in. When Ole Miss had a chance to tie it in overtime, Bo Wallace fumbled the ball, and the game, away.
This game, and the Liberty Bowl that followed it, set Mississippi State up with momentum for an incredible 2014 campaign.
