What Would Nick Fitzgerald Need To Do To Win The Heisman In 2018?
By Ethan Lee
When Could The Mississippi State Football Team Get A Big Enough Win To Get Heisman Voters To Turn Fitzgerald’s Way?
Similar to a Heisman hopeful’s need for a big moment, it helps to have a monumental win on your resume if you want to win the Heisman Trophy.
Last season, Oklahoma and Baker Mayfield had a couple. The Sooners beat then No. 2 Ohio State in Columbus, won at No. 11 Oklahoma State, and then took down TCU twice, once when they were ranked No. 8 and then once when they were ranked No. 10.
In 2016, Lamar Jackson led 10th ranked Louisville to victory over then No. 2 Florida State. That was Louisville’s biggest win for the entire season and, along with his stellar play all season, helped him earn the Heisman.
In 2015, Derrick Henry helped Alabama beat No. 20 Wisconsin, No. 8 Georgia, No. 9 A&M, No. 2 LSU, and No. 17 Mississippi State. That’s a few notable victories right there. And, ultimately, the Tide went on to win the title.
For Nick Fitzgerald, the Bulldogs are going to have to claim at least one huge win to cement his resume. What are the best opportunities to get that win?
This season, the Mississippi State football team hosts the Florida Gators, the Auburn Tigers, and the Texas A&M Aggies. Beyond that, the Bulldogs go to Death Valley to face LSU, and then also visits the Alabama Crimson Tide. Depending on how these teams play and how they are ranked, any of these could theoretically be a big enough win to get national attention.
However, Fitzgerald’s best bet at getting Heisman hype is for him to knock down Alabama. That’s not an easy thing to accomplish, but it’ll certainly cement the argument for him to win the Heisman.
