How Does The SEC Decide Which Teams Will Get In?

In the SEC baseball tournament, only 12 teams make it in. That means two teams are left at home watching the action happen. How are those 12 picked to play in Hoover, Alabama? It’s based off of the winning percentage in SEC play.

That’s fairly straightforward, right? It means that the two Southeastern Conference teams with the worst SEC winning percentage, regardless of what division they might be a member of, will be forced to sit out of the SEC Tournament.

Need an example?

If hypothetical Team A has 5 SEC wins and 20 SEC losses and hypothetical Team B has 4 SEC wins and 19 SEC losses, then our hypothetical Team B will miss the SEC Tournament. Why? Team A has a SEC winning percentage of 20 percent. Team B has a SEC winning percentage of 17.4 percent. Winning 5 of 25 games equals out to a better winning percentage than winning 4 of 19 games does.

Now, that’s just a hypothetical, made up situation. Time to examine what the SEC has right now and where MSU is in the standings.
