Alex Wilcox, The Mississippi State Softball Freshman Battling Ovarian Cancer, Received Support From The Ole Miss Softball Team
Alex Wilcox, a freshman on the Mississippi State softball team has been battling ovarian cancer. She’s been fighting it for a few years now and, when she arrived in Starkville, her teammates naturally supported her in that fight.
Lately, we’ve seen support come in from all over the nation.
Several other teams started wearing teal to honor Wilcox as well as others fighting the disease. Earlier this season, David Kuhn and the University of Central Arkansas raised funds for Wilcox’s medical bills by wearing special jerseys and then auctioning them off.
When I spoke with Kuhn, the head coach of the Central Arkansas softball team, he informed me that, at that time, they raised over four thousand dollars for her medical bills.
This weekend, we’ve seen another team in Mississippi support Wilcox. Mississippi State has travelled up to Oxford for the weekend to play a series with their rival. During this series, Ole Miss decided to do something special for Mississippi State and Alex Wilcox. When the Bulldogs arrived, the Rebels greeted Mississippi State by wearing teal shirts.
On the back of those shirts was Wilcox’s name and the slogan, “No One Fights Alone.” That also happens to be the slogan of the campaign that Mississippi State is doing to raise awareness of ovarian cancer.
Ole Miss and Mississippi State are rivals. That’s pretty well documented. And though the rivalry can get fairly ridiculous at times, it can also be used to unite people. This weekend, the Ole Miss softball team made an incredible gesture to support Wilcox.
