The Bulldogs’ Defensive Line Will Create Pressure Even If Jeffery Simmons Doesn’t Play Much

Jeffery Simmons played the bulk of the 2017 season with a torn labrum in his shoulder. That means he was good enough to be a First Team All-SEC defensive lineman despite not having full use of his arm. That’s incredible.

And, well, Simmons, like Nick Fitzgerald, has been practicing in a yellow jersey this spring. He’s limited in what he can do. However, even without him, Mississippi State’s defensive line should still be really good.

Montez Sweat, Gerri Green, Cory Thomas, Braxton Hoyett, Chauncey Rivers, and Kobe Jones are all still very good. They’re all going to push on opposing offensive lines. And they could make several big plays in the spring game.

And that isn’t very bold to say, at least on the surface.

However, Mississippi State football has a very good offensive line. The Bulldogs are returning a total of 4 full-time starters from last season as well as replacing their only departure with a guy who started 4 games last season in relief appearances.

Mississippi State’s offensive line matched up with some of the best last season. Their cohesiveness will create issues for opposing defensive lines. Still, don’t be surprised if MSU’s own d-line moves past and frustrates their teammates on the offensive front.
