Mississippi State Football Ties for Seventh in SEC For Best Odds to Win a National Title
Mississippi State football isn’t being considered much of a national title contender for the 2019 season. In Bovada’s latest odds, Mississippi State comes up tied with Missouri for the 7th best odds amongst SEC teams to win a national championship next year.
At the top of the conference, and the overall national picture, comes Alabama. In the SEC, the Crimson Tide is followed by Georgia and Auburn, both of whom are in the top 10 in odds nationally.
Those teams being ranked where they are should come as no surprise to anyone. Alabama is still, well, Alabama. Another year, another expected national championship for Bama. The Tide is above Clemson for overall odds as the Tigers have become a powerhouse with Dabo Swinney.
Ohio State is the third overall team and they’re just above Georgia. The Bulldogs, as has already been mentioned, are considered as the team with the second best odds from the SEC to win it all in 2018-2019.
The spot makes sense from a couple of standpoints.
First, even though the Bulldogs are expected to have a pretty good season, it’s unrealistic to say that Mississippi State will win a national title next year.
Yes, Mississippi State is bringing back a lot of production. In fact, they’re bringing back almost all of their major contributors. Amongst all that is returning, MSU gets Nick Fitzgerald back from being injured in the 2017 Egg Bowl.
However, it still remains to be seen if he’ll be just as explosive as he once was before the injury. Hopefully, he will. But we still don’t know for certain just yet.
And yes, all of that experience and production should lead to an exciting and fun football season for Mississippi State. But winning a national title isn’t simple. It takes more than an exciting and fun team to win it all.
On top of that, MSU will have a tough road ahead of them.
The Bulldogs still play in the Southeastern Conference. It’s not like the SEC is all that easy to win. MSU would likely have to find its way to Atlanta and into the SEC Championship game to earn national title consideration.
Even then, State might have to win the conference to get in. After last season’s national title being two SEC teams, it’s possible that there will be some SEC fatigue. If that’s the case and MSU has to win in Atlanta, that almost certainly means beating out either Auburn or Alabama to win the SEC West. Then MSU must beat either Georgia or Florida in Atlanta.
Can Mississippi State Surprise People?
In theory, yes. They absolutely can.
The Bulldogs got an exciting coach in Joe Moorhead who is looking to turn Mississippi State into a championship caliber program. He wants to take the Mississippi State Bulldogs from a team that scares blue blood opponents every now and then and make MSU a team that beats those elite programs.
He wants to take Mississippi State from a good program and elevate it into a great program.

And as was mentioned, Mississippi State is bringing a lot of production back next season. Moorhead doesn’t have emptied cabinets. He’s got a lot to work with. And should Nick Fitzgerald be fully healthy and recovered from his injury, then MSU will have a senior leader that can run on any SEC defense.
It’s possible that Mississippi State football can make plenty of noise this season. It’s possible that they’ll get the upsets needed to gain more national prominence and respect. But that still remains to be seen. If they get those wins, then expect those odds to go up. And if you’re feeling confident about Mississippi State, take your money to Vegas and hope that you clear them out.
