Mississippi State Overcomes Utah Valley in 8th Inning Comeback

The Mississippi State Bulldogs may have dropped their first matchup with the Utah Valley Wolverines. That certainly may be true. But thanks to a powerful comeback effort, Mississippi State took down the Wolverines in the second game of their doubleheader by a score of 4 to 2.

Like game one, Mississippi State struck first. This time, the Bulldogs claimed a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning. After Jake Mangum struck out and Hunter Stovall earned a four pitch walk, Tanner Allen came in and doubled into right field, bringin Stovall home.

Utah Valley tied things up in the 3rd with a RBI single into center field. The Wolverines then claimed their lead in the 6th inning thanks to another RBI single up the middle, putting Utah Valley up 2-1.

In the 8th inning, Mississippi State fought back to tie things up and take the lead. Like the first inning all over again, Mangum struck out, but Stovall earned another walk. And again, Allen doubled into right field, knotting things up at 2-2. Luke Alexander then put the game out of reach. On the second pitch of the at bat, Alexander sent the ball over the left field wall, giving MSU the 4-2 lead.

Ethan Small earned the start tonight and threw 6.0 innings, holding Utah Valley to 2 runs in the process. In his time on the mound, Small faced 21 batters and sat 10 of them down on strikes. Keegan James came in relief and walked away the winning pitcher in the game. James threw for 2 innings and struck a pair of Wolverines out. Last and certainly not least, Blake Smith came in to save the game, which would be his second of the season.

The Bulldogs’ winning streak was ended at 5 games with the game one loss. But MSU got things back on course by taking game two. After that doubleheader, Mississippi State is 9-6 overall, and 3-1 at home. Due to weather concerns, MSU will take the day off tomorrow. State will have their opportunity to get to 10 wins on Sunday as they look to take the series from Utah Valley.
