Mississippi State and New Mexico State Prepare to Play Game Two

Yesterday, the Mississippi State baseball team had little issue with the visiting New Mexico State Aggies. And there’s no better way to open a brand new, multimillion dollar stadium than with a 9-1 win. As it turns out, that’s exactly what the Bulldogs did.

Now, Mississippi State is getting set to play the Aggies again. The Bulldogs are looking to add to their four game winning streak and will have a great opportunity to do so tonight.

After starting Cole Marsh for 5.0 innings and following him up with Denver McQuary to finish the game, Gary Henderson is turning to Zach Neff tonight. Neff stands 6-1 and is a 5th year transfer in from Austin Peay University.

Neff has previously played in three games this season, against Southern Miss, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, and then Houston. He hasn’t thrown much this year, only pitching for 5.2 innings. In that short amount of time on the mound, Neff has amassed a 6.35 ERA and will unfortunately be facing a team that has a relatively potent offense. However, this will still be a solid chance for Neff to get his feet under him and to improve as the rest of the team has as of late.

The Bulldogs will look to give Neff plenty of run support so he doesn’t have to carry the full burden of this game. Last night against the Aggies, Mississippi State piled on 9 runs off of 12 hits and 6 walks. If Neff has a decent outing and Bulldogs’ bats can replicate that performance, this game shouldn’t be much of an issue for MSU.

After this midweek game, Mississippi State will face off against the Utah Valley University Wolverines. The Bulldogs and Wolverines will play this weekend in a three game series. Utah Valley is 4-7 on the year, but does have a win over University of Southern California and went 1-3 against Texas A&M Corpus Christi.
