Mississippi State Men’s Basketball: Nick and Quinndary Weatherspoon Named to All SEC Teams
By Ethan Lee
The Mississippi State men’s basketball team has been very fortunate to have both Quinndary and Nick Weatherspoon. The Weatherspoon brothers, as a duo, have been instrumental in Mississippi State’s resurgence and rebuild and they’re being rewarded for it.
Yesterday, Mississippi State’s duo was celebrating the Howell Award, which both were finalists for and Quinndary wound up winning. The Howell Trophy is given to the best men’s basketball player at a college in Mississippi. Now, today, both Nick and Quinndary Weatherspoon have been named to All-SEC teams.
Quinndary Weatherspoon Named Second Team All-SEC
Quinndary Weatherspoon has been the cornerstone for Ben Howland’s rebuild at Mississippi State. The men’s basketball team has relied heavily upon the elder Weatherspoon brother over the past few years. And now that there is plenty of talent around Q and the team has meshed together, the wins are finally here.
Q Weatherspoon has been able to thrive this season. His stats certainly speak for themselves. On the year, Q is averaging 14.7 points, 5.9 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 1.5 steals per game. Those are career highs in both assists and rebounds. Although his scoring is down slightly, Quinndary is now hitting his shots at a career high 49.5% field goal percentage.
Nick Weatherspoon Named SEC All-Freshman Team
The younger of the two Weatherspoon brothers at Mississippi State is also having a stellar season. While Q is the leading scorer on the team, Nick is not far behind him. The young guard is averaging 11.1 points per game and 2.1 assists per game. Certainly solid totals for a freshman who looks to continue to develop and lead Mississippi State forward.

The men’s basketball team is getting ready to take on LSU again on Thursday. The Bulldogs will be playing the Tigers in Saint Louis, Missouri in the SEC Tournament. Though the last time the two teams met, MSU fell, the Bulldogs are certainly looking to bounce back. To do so, Mississippi State will need both Weatherspoon brothers to play at a high level.
