According To A Tweet from MSU’s Baseball Account, Cowbells are Banned

Back in my day, Mississippi State allowed cowbells at baseball games. They were always present back in the good ole days. Among the smoke from the outfield and flurry of fans enjoying America’s pastime, cowbells were always present.

I graduated less than three months ago. This was back in December.

And now, as Mississippi State is finishing up the details and polishing up the New Dudy Noble Field, there is some minor controversy brewing regarding cowbells. According to a tweet at 11:00 earlier today from @HailStatebb, Mississippi State’s official account for the baseball team, cowbells will be barred from being present at baseball games.

Which, you know, is certainly an odd policy given that this is Mississippi State that we are talking about. And it’s not even football games where the SEC outlawed cowbells, semi-sacred MSU tradition for decades. This is baseball that we are talking about. It’s an outdoor environment. It’s laid back and occurring at a slow pace.

As was mentioned, this is America’s pastime. On top of that, baseball and the New Dudy Noble are the Mississippi State athletic department’s crown jewel. And it looks like the university might make some sort of effort to prohibit fans from enjoying a famed university tradition.

It Doesn’t Appear on MSU’s Prohibited Items

I’m sure this will be clarified in the coming days. On the official lists of policies in this tweet and prohibited items, cowbells are not present.

It’ll be interesting to see how Mississippi State clarifies and resolves this. It would certainly be an interesting move for the university to ban cowbells, an item synonymous with Mississippi State, from the university’s favorite sport.

The baseball team is returning home after a long road trip. It has continuously proven to be a resilient bunch. The Bulldogs played 11 games on the road. MSU has only played 4 games in the state of Mississippi. A homecoming and unveiling of Dudy Noble Field without cowbells will certainly have an impact of some sort on the atmosphere.

UPDATE:

According to the Clarion Ledger’s Will Sammon, this is a policy that has always been in place. It doesn’t look like it’s ever been enforced. So, your bell will be safe. It’s not something that you have to worry about.
