Mississippi State vs South Carolina Preview

For the third time in three years, Mississippi State will play the South Carolina Gamecocks in the SEC Tournament Championship game. The Bulldogs and the Gamecocks have met up quite a few times in recent history, playing each other three times a year ago. Unfortunately for Mississippi State, USC was able to come away with all three wins, including in the national title game.

This season has been a bit different, however. Mississippi State is a perfect 32-0 and looks to keep rolling through opponents. Earlier this season when these two teams met up, MSU hosted the Gamecocks and beat them by 14 points, 67 to 53.

In the SEC Tournament, Mississippi State has won both of their games decisively. That said, the Bulldogs have been challenged early on in each of those games and had deficits heading into the second quarter. Vic Schaefer’s team hasn’t trailed all that often this season, but they did against Kentucky on Friday and then also Texas A&M on Saturday.

MSU still won both of those games by an average margin of 19 points after defeating UK by 23 and A&M by 15.

To their credit, The Gamecocks, like their Maroon and White opponents for the day, have also been playing incredibly well. South Carolina is 25-6 on the season and they’ve blown by their competition in the SEC Tournament.

In their first game in Nashville, South Carolina beat Tennessee by 11 points, winning 73 to 62. Their second win in Bridgestone Arena was much more impressive than their first. While playing their rival, the University of Georgia, South Carolina won 71 to 49, absolutely thrashing the Bulldogs.

Mississippi State and South Carolina both want the prize of winning the SEC Tournament Championship. For the Bulldogs, it means their first conference championship title in the program’s history. For the Gamecocks, it means a continued dominance in the conference. The teams will meet at 3:30 this afternoon.
