Bulldogs Beat Bearkats 4-1

Mississippi State’s baseball team officially has a winning record this season. The Bulldogs’ rough start to the year has turned into a three game winning streak as Mississippi State took down Sam Houston State 4-1 today.

After beating the University of Louisiana at Lafayette on Friday and then taking the University of Houston down in extra innings last night, MSU’s win today gave them a sweep over their opponents in the Shriner’s College Classic.

MSU took on the Bearkats in Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas and wasted no time scoring. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. With Jake Mangum on third already, Tanner Allen tripled to bring him home. Luke Alexander would then follow that act with a single that would move Allen across the plate as well. After a few walks loaded the bases, Tanner Poole would earn a walk of his own, getting MSU that 3-0 lead.

The Bulldogs wouldn’t score again until the seventh inning. In the top of that inning, a wild pitch would allow Alexander to come home and score an unearned run. That run would give MSU a 4-0 lead.

Sam Houston State would attempt to cut into that lead in the bottom of the eighth inning, but only managed a single run. The score of 4-1 would be what Mississippi State would walk away with.

Jake Billingsley earned his first win of the year with a strong start and 6 strikeouts in 6.0 innings. Keegan James  stepped in to relieve him for 1.2 innings where he allowed 1 run. Cole Gordon then stepped in, threw 1.1 innings and earned a save.

With a record of 6-5, Mississippi State is now heading back home to Starkville to play in Dudy Noble for the first time this year. MSU is hosting New Mexico State for two midweek tilts, the first on Tuesday and the second on Wednesday. MSU will then host Utah Valley for a series this weekend.
