Bulldogs in the NFL: Colts sign Josh Boyd
The Indianapolis Colts announced they have signed former Mississippi State and Green Bay Packers defensive lineman Josh Boyd.
On Friday afternoon, many Mississippi State fans are focused on the baseball team’s crucial game versus the Georgia Bulldogs in Athens.
But, some NFL news:
The Indianapolis Colts have announced that they have signed Josh Boyd to a contract, after cutting former Tennessee linebacker Curt Maggitt.
From the Colts’ official release:
"The Indianapolis Colts today signed free agent defensive tackle Josh Boyd and waived outside linebacker Curt Maggitt with an injury settlement.Boyd, 6-3, 310 pounds, played in 26 career games (four starts) in three seasons (2013-15) with the Green Bay Packers and totaled 43 tackles (23 solo) and one pass defensed. He appeared in three postseason contests (one start) and tallied two tackles (one solo). Boyd was originally selected by the Packers in the fifth round (167th overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft out of Mississippi State."
The 167th overall selection of the 2013 NFL Draft has dealt with injuries during his professional career, but still has the ability to be a reliable rotational player for the Colts this upcoming season. The Colts’ site notes of Boyd’s injuries and some career stats while he was in Green Bay:
"In 2015, Boyd saw action in two games and recorded one solo tackle before being placed on the Injured Reserve list. He played in 15 games (four starts) in 2014 and compiled 34 tackles (18 solo) and one pass defensed. Boyd started one of two postseason contests for the Packers. As a rookie in 2013, he appeared in nine games and made eight tackles (four solo). Boyd saw action in one postseason contest and registered two tackles (one solo)."
Josh Boyd was a former 4-star prospect and Army All-American when he came out of Philadelphia (MS) High School in the 2009 signing class. On a defensive line with Fletcher Cox and Pernell McPhee, Boyd became a standout player for the Bulldogs. Listed at 6-foot-3 and 310 pounds, the 27-year old defensive end will have an opportunity to make an impact this season in Indy.
