Mississippi State Football: 5 biggest question marks
2. Quarterback
Last week MSU had four talented QBs, but now we’re down to three:
- Jr. Damian Williams
- So. Nick Fitzgerald
- Fr. Nick Tiano
Williams has played meaningful snaps, but not since 2013, and redshirted 2015. Fitzgerald has only played in garbage time. Tiano has never played.
And the experience factor is basically the reverse of the perceived “potential” for each QB. Williams is the game manager, Fitz might be a poor man’s Dak, and Tiano might be the next Dak. At least that’s what we think.
General consensus is that Nick Fitzgerald will win the job. He may not get the first snaps of the season, but he’ll play the vast majority of them throughout the year. It seems hard to argue that based on the information we have – he just looks more talented than Williams and has been on campus for 2.5 years so he should know the offense like the back of his hand.
The play-making requirements for a Mississippi State QB are not going to be the same as it was in 2014 or 2015, but this is still the most important position on the field so we need some good play.
