When does football start?
With all of the off the field minutia, I’m left counting the days until football begins.
A week in the life of a Mississippi State fan right now is enough to make your skin crawl.
- what’s happening with Ole Miss’ NCAA investigation?
- is Dan Mullen responsible for Jeffrey Simmons?
- looks like there’s been another ISIS attack killing dozens of innocent people.
That last one doesn’t have anything to do with Mississippi State. But it’s another brick in the wall of the disillusionment for the summer of 2016.
This morning we found out former wide receiver Chris Smith was shot and killed. He played at MSU from 2009-12, and started all four years. He makes three players who’ve played under Coach Mullen to pass away (Nick Bell, Keith Joseph).
The endless national news cycle is enough to put you into a deep depression. Sports are supposed to be an escape from that world, right? But we’ve interjected social issues and vitriol into sports so they aren’t much fun anymore. At least not right now.

In three months we’ll reach six years at M&WN. I’ve never experienced a summer quite like this one. Football – actual football – is no where to be seen. Nowhere at all. I hate it.
Should it really be a surprise? This is what we’ve devolved into.
You go to Thanksgiving dinner with your family and 30 minutes before the meal is served you can walk into a room to see everyone checking their phone. Why? You uselessly play on your phone while in the waiting room at the doctor’s office but why with your family? I guess just so you don’t miss a second of the up-to-the-second news cycle.
If it weren’t for social media maybe we wouldn’t know about every little thing. Maybe we wouldn’t know about every detail of Ole Miss’ NCAA investigation. Maybe we wouldn’t have seen the video of Jeffrey Simmons hitting that woman. Maybe Coach 34 would’ve been able to live his life coaching football at South Panola. Maybe we wouldn’t hear about every shooting or every bad decision our government makes. Ignorance is bliss, after all.
There’s good and bad to it all – as we all know. As far as sports go, I think it’s created a focus on only what’s right here in front of us and that’s it. People can’t discuss football because that’s two or three months away. The only thing to discuss is off-the-field stuff….endless BS.
I guess the concept of this website is based on the idea that you want all the information you can possibly get about Mississippi State. Why else would you be reading on July 16th? There are no Bulldog sports going on right now – there is no reason for you to read.
But folks stop by every day. In hopes, I suppose, to find out the latest news. That’s the only thing I can figure, because when we write about actual football it falls on deaf ears. I could break down film and spend two hours writing a post and it gets 300 views. If I slap together some hit piece on OM in five minutes it’ll get 10,000. Sad really.
Nevertheless, we keep trucking along. I’ll put my blinders on and try to ignore the noise as hard as it may be. Maybe you’re one to enjoy not hearing about the latest gossip – if that’s the case I hope I can provide something of interest to you as we move forward into football season.
There are seven more weeks until kickoff, so we have to survive the heat and BS until then. Here are some key dates to remember:
- July 21st – Jackson extravaganza
- July 23rd – Ladies clinic
- August 1st – players report
- August 2nd – first day of practice
- September 3rd – first game (vs. South Alabama @ Davis Wade)
