Periodically throughout the summer, we will be taking a look at individual members of the Famous Maroon Band which make the game day environment so great.

One of the great things about college football game day at any school is the atmosphere. And one of the most important parts, and often under appreciated, is the band.

I was in the band in high school and spent two years paying for my education in the band at Northwest Community College before finishing up at Mississippi State. So I decided to put the spotlight on the Famous Maroon Band this summer.

Today’s spotlight is on Jesse Newton. He is one of the Drum Majors for the Famous Maroon Band. Cooper will be entering his senior year at Mississippi State for the 2016-17 school year.

Are there any other instruments or musical talents you possess?

"I played the Alto Saxophone my Freshman year at State, then I was in our Color guard my Sophomore year, then this past year, as well as this year I am one of the Drum Majors."

In all likelihood, you joined the band in middle school or junior high. What made you want to be in the band at that time?

"I wanted to join band in Middle School because it looked so much fun! I would go to football games with my family as a kid just to watch the band perform! The combination of musicianship, theatrics, costumes, etc seemed like such a blast!"

What musicians have had the biggest influence on you?

"As a Fashion Design and Merchandising major in the School of Human Sciences, my biggest musician influence is Lady Gaga. I love how she promotes body positivity and loving yourself in the fashion and music industry and I think she is phenomenal."

What is your favorite memory of being a member of the Famous Maroon Band?

"My favorite band memory is getting to conduct the band for the first time last year at band camp where I led us in our traditional serenade of the campus, where we finish our day playing the Fight Song. That, along with traveling with all 300+ plus friends to Charlotte, NC for the Belk Bowl was so much fun."

What is your favorite non-band related memory at Mississippi State?

"My favorite non-band memory at MSU is when I get to travel with our Fashion Dept. We have been to Seattle, New York, Italy, etc. going on different adventures to fashion companies, conferences, etc. My favorite in particular is exploring the streets Florence, Italy with some of my best friends in the middle  of the night."

You can follow Jesse on a number of social media platforms. His Instagram handle is @fig_newton01. Jesse’s Twitter handle is also @fig_newton01.

Thanks to Jesse for allowing us to feature him in this Famous Maroon Band Profile. Also thanks to Dr. Craig Aarhus, one of the Associate Directors of the Famous Maroon Band for working with us to be able to spotlight the members of the band.
