Periodically throughout the summer, we will be taking a look at individual members of the Famous Maroon Band which make the game day environment so great.

One of the great things about college football game day at any school is the atmosphere. And one of the most important parts, and often under appreciated, is the band.

I was in the band in high school and spent two years paying for my education in the band at Northwest Community College before finishing up at Mississippi State. So I decided to put the spotlight on the Famous Maroon Band this summer.

Today’s spotlight is on Gavin King. He plays trumpet for the Famous Maroon Band. Gavin will be entering his senior year at Mississippi State for the 2016-17 school year.

Are there any other instruments or musical talents you possess?

"I am the Worship Minister at a local United Methodist Church."

In all likelihood, you joined the band in middle school or junior high. What made you want to be in the band at that time?

"The high school band in my hometown was so revered in my community, and I wanted to be a part of that Friday night tradition."

What musicians have had the biggest influence on you?

"My favorite musician of all time is Ray Charles. Not only did Mr. Charles overcome incredible obstacles to reach world recognition, but he excelled in multiple genres and on multiple instruments. I value that type of versatility."

What is your favorite memory of being a member of the Famous Maroon Band?

"I am a native of Opelika, Alabama—a town right next door to Auburn. So, the 2014 Auburn vs. Mississippi State game featuring two Top 5 teams, a College Gameday Broadcast, and one of the biggest wins in Bulldog history has to be one of my favorites. The entire Maroon Band got soaked on the sideline that day, and I did not care. Why would I? My school was about to be the #1 team in the nation."

What is your favorite non-band related memory at Mississippi State?

"This past Spring, my peers elected me to serve as the Attorney General of our student body during our student government’s elections. I am incredibly blessed to wake up each day and serve 20,000+ students and attempt leave this university better than I found it."
