#37 Jay Powell, Baseball Pitcher (1991-1993)

Jay Powell was a dominant pitcher for the Bulldogs in the early 1990s. He had a chance to go straight to the professional ranks when he was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 1990 Amateur Draft. Instead, he elected to come to Starkville to improve his draft stock. And he did an incredible job of that. In 1991 Jay Powell was named a Freshman All-American. He was also named to the All-SEC team in 1991 as well as in 1993, and Powell found himself drafted in the first round of the amateur draft in 1993. Powell was picked 19th overall by the Atlanta Braves, and he had a long and productive career in Major League Baseball.
