The guy who beat Ron Hunter’s team in the 2014 Sun Belt championship game was Bob Marlin of Louisiana-Lafayette. That was his lone trip to the big dance in five seasons as their coach, but he’s shown steady improvement reaching the 20-win plateau in each of the last two seasons.

Marlin does have connections to Mississippi State – he is an alumni, class of 1981. He grew up in Tupelo so there’s a clear connection to the Bulldogs that would be desirable (but not necessary).
