Since about week 6, I have had a prevailing thought about the SEC. I haven’t really talked about it because I wanted to get a little more evidence before I openly talked about it. I got plenty of evidence in week 8. So what is that thought? There are only five good teams in the SEC.

Those five teams are among the nation’s best, but the rest of the conference is mediocre or bad. The SEC is relying heavily on the top third of the conference. So how does it affect the Power Rankings? Scroll on down to see. And as always, here is how I ranked them last week.

  1. Mississippi State Bulldogs 6-0 (Last Week 1) The Bulldogs got the week off to scout Kentucky after the huge win over Auburn. Great timing for the bye week.
  2. Ole Miss Rebels 7-0 (Last Week 2) That defense is flat out salty. If they have an off night and ask their offense to win a game, I’d be concerned.
  3. Auburn Tiger 5-1 (Last Week 3) The Tigers had the week off as well. Probably good for them to work out some holes that might have been exposed by the Bulldogs.
  4. Alabama Crimson Tide 6-1 (Last Week 5) I came close to jumping them over Auburn, but decided against it. The Tide are still good, especially when people start ticking off Nick Saban.
  5. Georgia Bulldogs 6-1 (Last Week 4) They took their foot off the gas against the Razorbacks, and if the Razorbacks had any offensive weapons in the passing game, it might have cost them.
  6. LSU Tigers 6-2 (Last Week 6) The demise of the LSU Tigers has been greatly exaggerated. The Tigers may not be in a position to challenge for a spot in the College Football Playoff, but the Tigers could change a lot of people’s opinion of them if they can get an upset win over Ole Miss next week.
  7. Kentucky Wildcats 5-2 (Last Week 8) How craptastic is the bottom half of the SEC? The Wildcats got their butts whipped up and down the field, and I had no choice but to MOVE THEM UP in the power rankings. The Wildcats are a decent team, but there is no way they should be this high, but the bottom half of the SEC is just bad.
  8. Missouri Tigers 5-3 (Last Week 11) I never thought a 42-13 win could look so bad. The Tigers scored all but one of their touchdowns on 6 Florida Gators turnovers or terrible special teams play by the Gators. Missouri is a few more fluke wins and an Auburn win in Athens from representing the East in the Championship Game. That would not go well for Missouri.
  9. Texas A&M Aggies 5-3 (Last Week 7) I thought the Aggies were looking at a 6 or 7 win season before the 2014 season began. I think I am going to be pretty close to right on that one. The Aggies are not good.
  10. South Carolina Gamecocks 3-3 (Last Week 11) Because someone has to go here.
  11. Arkansas Razorbacks 3-4 (Last Week 9) My wife’s family is from Arkansas. They are all Razorbacks’ fans. This team is just ripping their heart out and stomping it on the ground. Between the close losses or failed comeback attempts, the Hogs are just killing their fans slowly.
  12. Tennessee Volunteers 3-4 (Last Week 13) The Volunteers have an offensive line that couldn’t block new born puppies, but they move up a spot because their loss wasn’t nearly as bad as the team in 13th.
  13. Florida Gators 3-3 (Last Week 12) The Gators loss was so bad and so inept, I came real close to knocking them down to last. How do you only give up less than 200 yards and still lose by almost 30 points?
  14. Vanderbilt Commodores 2-5 (Last Week 14) Commodores fans be like, “See! We told you that you can’t lose if you don’t play!”

Once you get past the seven spot, the teams just aren’t very good. I still had to move teams up because people were trying to outdo each other with how bad they were losing. The top half of the Power Rankings are shaping up pretty nicely, and it appears we have a pretty good idea who will be there at the end of the season. WHo knows what is going to happen with those bottom teams.
