It was an interesting weekend in the SEC during Week 5. Despite the fact that we are five weeks into the season, we are still trying to figure out exactly how good or bad some of these teams are. The SEC West is making a strong case to have 7 of the top 20 teams in the country. The SEC East is still making us think that they are an insult to mediocrity.

The part I struggle with when I do these Power Rankings is how to factor in a bad performance in a win. That happened a few times this weekend. I hadn’t penalized clubs too much for this up until this point, but this week will change that. If you want to know how I stacked the SEC up last week, just click here.

  1. Alabama 4-0 (Last Week 2) Alabama gets moved up because the final bit of confidence I had in Texas A&M at the top spot finally snapped.
  2. Mississippi State 4-0 (Last Week 3) Mississippi State still sits at 4-0 and still has the best win of any team in the SEC on their resume.
  3. Texas A&M 5-0 (Last Week 1) Yes, I dropped them. I thought that win over South Carolina was going to end up being less impressive than most thought it was, and I think their performance against the Razorbacks demonstrated that. That defense of Arkansas is average at best, and they gave Hill and the Aggies a hard time all day Saturday.
  4. Auburn 4-0 (Last Week 4) Auburn stays put with a pretty ho-hum week against Louisiana Tech.
  5. Ole Miss 4-0 (Last Week 5) They would have dropped had Arkansas and South Carolina won. But we don’t truly know anything about this team. Sometimes they look great. Sometimes they look awful. Who knows how good they really are.
  6. LSU 4-1 (Last Week 6) Beating up a really bad NMSU team doesn’t move you up.
  7. Arkansas 3-2 (Last Week 7) They almost broke through against Auburn. They almost did it again against Texas A&M. They are going to upset someone this season. Just hope it isn’t the Bulldogs.
  8. Missouri 4-1 (Last Week 10) The team in the driver’s seat for the SEC East championship lost to Indiana.
  9. Georgia 3-1 (Last Week 9) Gurley is really good. The rest of that team is really average.
  10. South Carolina 3-2 (Last Week 8) South Carolina just isn’t very good.
  11. Florida 2-1 (Last Week 11) Florida stays put, though I heard the bye week played their hearts out.
  12. Kentucky 3-1 (Last Week 13) Winning your first conference game in a very long time gets you bumped up a spot.
  13. Tennessee 2-2 (Last Week 12) There is some talent on this Tennessee team, but it’s really young. It shows at the worst possible times for the Vols.
  14. Vanderbilt 1-4 (Last Week 14) We need to find some participation trophies for the Commodores.

The Power Rankings are going to really get shaken up next week. #1 plays at #5, #3 plays at #2, and #6 plays at #4. Then there are some games involving the East. Head back here at 3:00 next week to see how it changed things up.
