Injuries piling up for Mississippi State football ahead of trip to Texas

There's a lot of names on the Bulldogs' initial injury report for Week 5.

Mississippi State football heads to Austin to take on the top-ranked Texas Longhorns, and based on Wednesday night's initial availability report from the SEC, the Bulldogs are pretty banged-up ahead of the road trip to the Lonestar State.

Running back Keyvone Lee to miss time for Mississippi State

Bulldogs RB Keyvone Lee exited last Saturday's game at halftime with an unknown injury. Jeff Lebby announced on Monday that Lee will be out for multiple weeks. Lee has been State's primary starter in the backfield and was in the midst of his best performance of the year against the Gators before going down. Johnnie Daniels and Davon Booth will have to take on larger roles in Lee's abscence, and true freshman Xavier Gayten (who is without an injury designation after being out last week) may see carries.

Wide receiver Creed Whittemore sitting-out rest of season

State got bad news Wednesday night. Shortly after being listed as out for the trip to Austin, news broke that sophomore WR Creed Whittemore will sit-out the rest of the season and redshirt. It seems this move is a result of limited opportunities within the offense. Fellow WR Trent Hudson was also listed as out for Saturday, though there's no present news for that designation.

Defensive Tackle Kalvin Dinkins remains out for Bulldogs

The Bulldog defense will continue to play without one of its most talented defensive lineman. Kalvin Dinkins has not played since going down with injury in the season-opener. Fellow DT Kedrick Bingley-Jones is listed as questionable after missing last Saturday's game. State badly needs Bingley-Jones available vs Texas, and they really need Dinkins back as soon as possible.

Safety Isaac Smith probable after injury scare in last game

The lone piece of good news from Wednesday's injury report is that safety Isaac Smith is listed as probable for this weekend. Smith has been the lone bright-spot for the MSU defense, and after going down with a scary injury against the Gators, there were concerns he could miss time. While not official, it's trending towards him playing. That said, depth in the defensive backfield remains a concern. Backup safeties Tyler Woodard and Chris Keys Jr. are listed as out and questionable, respectively. Backup CBs Traveon Wright and DeAgo Brumfield are both questionable.

QB Quinn Ewers questionable for Texas

As for the Longhorns, the big storyline is whether or not starting QB Quinn Ewers makes his return to the lineup after missing last week. Hotshot Arch Manning made his first start at Texas in his place. Truth be told, Texas can likely afford to hold Ewers out another week. Also of note, one of Texas' top DBs, Derek Williams Jr., is doubtful for Saturday's matchup.
