Mississippi State football will kick-off the 2024 season in ten days, and we're breaking down the Bulldog roster to get ready. We now turn to the MSU cornerback room, which is a group that faces a lot of questions entering the season.

Here's a look at the State corners...

Who makes up Mississippi State's cornerback room?

Both starting CB spots are up from grabs as the season approaches. A pair of young corners in sophomore Brice Pollock and redshirt freshman Kelley Jones are expected to be some of the top contributors, if not starters. West Virginia-transfer Montre Miller is the most proven player of the bunch from his time at Kent State, and Memphis-transfer DeAgo Brumfield started 12 games for the Tigers last year. Another Memphis-transfer, Traveon Wright, should factor-in as well. Former Miami-transfer Khamauri Rogers was a highly-rated player out of high school, and ideally, his recruiting profile needs to translate into being a contributor.

Reasons for optimism in Mississippi State's cornerbacks

If a few players match their potential, the Bulldogs might be ok at CB. Brice Pollock was forced to take some lumps as a true freshman, but he's a talented player that should improve with more experience. If Kelley Jones can truly play CB in his 6'4" frame, he'd be a matchup nightmare for offenses. Montre Miller was a star at Kent State and was supposed to be a key part of WVU's secondary before getting injured last season. And I thought that Traveon Wright looked solid in the spring.

Reasons for concern with Mississippi State's cornerbacks

This position is the biggest question mark on the entire roster. Truthfully, we don't know if the Bulldogs have SEC-caliber corners. Montre Miller seems to be the player most needed to immediately step-in as a starter, but he's coming off an injury that knocked him out of last season (which kept him from getting power conference experience) and didn't go through spring at State. Is he going to be ready? We hope Brice Pollock make a sophomore jump, but there's still a lot being asked of him as a young player. Whether or not Kelley Jones' potential matches production is completely unknown, and are we sure a pair of transfers from Memphis, which had an awful secondary last season, were good additions? We'll see if a quality pair of starters emerge, but this is State's weakest-link until proven otherwise.
