Mississippi State recruit looked ready to decommit after Bulldogs' awful first quarter vs UMass
Mississippi State football is in the midst of its worst season in more than 20 years. First-year head coach Jeff Lebby has taken over a program that is, clearly, going through a complete and total rebuild, and the result has been, well a lot of poor results on the field.
And if things weren't already bad enough, now those terrible on-field results are leading to problems off the field.
Mississippi State recruit appears to be decommitting in the middle of Bulldogs' game with UMass
In the first half of the Bulldogs' matchup with the UMass Minutemen, video surfaced of an apparent Mississippi State recruit visiting Starkville preparing a post on "X" (Twitter) to decommit from Mississippi State.
At the time, State was trailing UMass 10-0 and looked on pace to suffer what would be the program's worst loss since falling to FCS Maine in 2004. Since then, the Bulldogs have scored five-straight touchdowns to take a 35-10 lead, but there was nothing about the first quarter to inspire confidence. You almost couldn't blame a recruit for wanting to jump ship after the way the first quarter was playing out.
And it does seem we've learned who was caught typing out his apparent decommitment. 3-star cornerback Iverson McCoy out of Tupelo took to "X" to say that he's still locked-in with Mississippi State.
It looks like, assuming it was in fact McCoy in the video, that he was simply typing out a decommitment post as a joke with no intentions of sending it out. And that's a good thing. McCoy is a Top-15 player in the state with offers from SEC rivals Ole Miss and Kentucky. He's a good prospect, and given State's issues on defense, they need all the help they can get.
Regardless of if this was just a joke and McCoy or any other recruits stay on-board with the Bulldogs after this game, this was an awful look for Mississippi State. The original video is already viral across social media, and what's been a miserable season for State is in no way flying under the radar nationally now.
Bulldog football quite literally became a punchline on Saturday. It won't matter if State wins this game with UMass easily and doesn't actually lose any commitments. A program that already struggles with perception just took another big perception hit to fans across the country. And even for potential recruits elsewhere, would you want to be a part of a program that's struggling so much that a visiting prospect looks ready to decommit mid-game? I can't say I would.
Jeff Lebby has got a lot of work to do to turn this program around and get people excited about Mississippi State football again and prevent them from going viral for all the wrong reasons.
