With the 2024 season in the rearview mirror, Mississippi State football is now fully into offseason mode. That means we're starting to see the overturn of the roster through the transfer portal, with a handful of players looking for opportunities elsewhere, One position group in particular has been active in terms of players choosing to leave the program for greener pastures.
Wide receiver Trent Hudson transferring from Mississippi State football
On Monday, we got word that senior wide receiver Trent Hudson was entering his name in the transfer portal. Hudson is the third Bulldog wideout to enter the portal so far this offseason alongside Creed Whittemore and JJ Harrell.
Hudson, who transferred in to Mississippi State from New Mexico State last summer, did not make an impact for the Bulldogs this fall. He saw minimal snaps in State's first four games and did not record a reception. Like fellow receiver (and now transfer) Creed Whittemore, Hudson chose to take a redshirt after four games and sit out the remainder of the 2024 season to preserve his eligibility.
When Hudson originally announced his decision to come to Starkville, it seemed like a big get for Jeff Lebby and Co. The Texas-native and JUCO-product had a huge year for New Mexico State in 2023. He hauled in 36 passes for 571 yards and led the Aggies with 10 receiving touchdowns. He was one of the top redzone targets in the country, and it seemed he would fill an important role in the Mississippi State offense this season.
That obviously was not the case. Hudson, by and large, couldn't get on the field ahead of State's top targets on the outside. There were vocal frustrations from his camp about the lack of opportunities, which made it no surprise that he ultimately chose to opt-out of the season four games in.
