Mississippi State football needs to attack the perimeter against the Georgia defense

Mississippi State football travels to face the 5th-ranked Georgia Bulldogs this Saturday in Athens. Georgia has its usual outstanding defense, and Mississippi State's offense will need to be much better if they're going to score even a respectable number of points. Here's how they can...

The Mississippi State offensive line will need to be at it's best in Athens

Mississippi State's offensive line has struggled immensely this season, and while we hope they've improved out of the bye week, they've got a big hilll to climb in Athens. Georgia, like always, is loaded on the defensive front. Nazir Stackhouse is a monster in the middle, and Mykel Williams and Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins are both terrors rushing off the edge. If State is going to move the ball on Saturday, they're going to need a season-best performance from the OL.

Teams have found success getting to the perimeter against Georgia

With the strength of Georgia's defensive front, it makes sense that offenses has looked to attack other parts of their defense. Notably, we've seen offenses attack the edge against the Bulldogs the last two weeks. Alabama used the perimeter run game with success in the first half against UGA. Auburn also looked to run outside, hitting on a few nice plays, while also using outside quick screens. Making the UGA defense move laterally has been a solid gameplan that State will likely try to imitate.

The QB run game could be a factor on Saturday

Something else that's given Georgia some problems on defense recently has been containing mobile QBs. Brock Vandergriff, Jalen Milore (obviously), and even Payton Thorne were able to scramble for nice gains against the Bulldogs. And again, doing so around the edge has been effective. Michael Van Buren has shown the ability to extend plays with his legs. He'll need to make use of that ability on Saturday, especially because his offensive line isn't likely to give him the best protection. But when he does, he'll have the chance for good yardage.
